Chapter 5

Matt put a hand over his mouth to stifle a yawn, then reached for his mug of coffee. Around him, members of Max's crew were hauling cables and setting up lights, not seeming to mind the earliness of the hour. Normally Matt didn't mind it either, but he'd gotten very little sleep, worries about the show making him toss and turn for most of the night.

He might have overstated the seriousness of the diner's finances to Ian a little, but things were almost as bad as he'd said. It wouldn't take much of a setback for Ian to lose the diner, and Matt had intertwined his own finances with the diner and the show in a way that left no safety net for him either. He knew things were still tense between Ian and Stephen, and he was glad Ian didn't mind him being around for the filming; as well as being able to support Ian, it gave him a chance to help avert any disasters he might see brewing before they derailed the show.

The diner opened at six every morning, and Max wanted to get footage from a whole day, including reaction shots and sound bite interviews from the customers, which meant the crew had been at the diner well before four, getting set up. Once Matt had sufficient caffeine in his system, he watched the proceedings with interest.

Ian emerged from the kitchen wearing his chef's whites and comfortable black clogs; he wore the uniform as a nod to his classical training, but the difference was that he'd obviously pressed his clothes for once instead of folding them straight out of the dryer. He headed over to Matt, offering a small but warm smile.

"Sorry for dragging you out of bed so early," he said, glancing around at the crew and seeming to relax a little, probably because Stephen wasn't there yet. "I appreciate you coming, though."

"Hey, you know I'd do anything for you." Matt smiled, resisting the urge to reach out and put his hands on Ian's shoulders for reassurance. "Besides, you made me gingersnaps, so you own my soul. At least until they're gone."

"So I should get another twelve hours or so with your soul?" Ian raised one eyebrow at him, his lips curving in a little smirk.

You can have it for the rest of our lives, if you want. Matt couldn't say what he was thinking, so he only smiled. "I think that's about the maximum that batch will last. Of course, I'm not averse to a long-term lease, depending on the terms."

"Help me get through this shoot with my sanity intact, and you can name your terms." Ian was smiling, but Matt could see the pensiveness in his eyes. "Anyway, I need to get back into the kitchen."

"Break a leg, as they say in showbiz," Matt replied. "And I'll watch out for your sanity. I brought super glue and duct tape, so if I see it cracking, I'll do emergency repairs."

"Or we can use it to shut Stephen up.
